Walküre
San Francisco Opera audiences didn't hear Wagner's Die Walküre until 1935, the time it arrived as part of the complete Ring cycle. But, that first outing, however, boasted a cast that included the Brünnhilde of Kirsten Flagstad.

 Walküre
The 1935 Walküre cast featured Lauritz Melchior in the role of Siegmund, about to pull a sword out of the tree for the benefit of the photographer.

The Ring, 1936
In 1936, our 1935 complete Ring returned, but with a different conductor. Just before starting Act II of Die Walküre, Lauritz Melchior (Siegmund), and Kirsten Flagstad (Brünnhilde) posed for a photo with the legendary Fritz Reiner.

Siegfried
Backstage between acts of our 1935 Siegfried, the evening's Alberich, Gustav Schützendorf, tries to look the appropriately baleful look for the benefit of the photographer.

Götterdämmerung
Our 1935 Ring was a career 'first' for Kirsten Flagstad, who sang her first Siegfried Brünnhilde anywhere on November 6th. Here she is center stage in Götterdämmerung. Behind her is Lauritz Melchior (Siegfried) and Dorothee Manski (Gutrune). Down front with his back turned is Friedrich Schorr's Gunther; far left, among the spears, is Emanuel List's mustachioed Hagen.

Götterdämmerung
Kirsten Flagstad as the Götterdämmerung  Brünnhilde, is in full cry between Friedrich Schorr's Gunther (top) and Emanuel List's Hagen.
