Synopsis

A famous writer, Gustav von Aschenbach, travels to Venice, where he becomes infatuated with a young adolescent, Tadzio, thus awakening the dormant, Dionysian side of his character. As a cholera epidemic grips the city, he tries to leave, but after an accident with his luggage, returns to the city and to his obsession with Tadzio. While watching Tadzio playing on the beach with other boys, he collapses and dies.

First performance:
Aldeburgh Festival, Snape, June 16, 1973

These performances represent the San Francisco Opera premiere of the Britten work. However, two previous stagings took place via one of the Company's affiliates, Spring Opera Theater, with performances at the Curran Theater, in 1975 and 1979. In both seasons, Ken Remo portrayed the role of Aschenbach.
