Synopsis

In a Norwegian fishing village, a strange ship is driven by a storm into the harbor. It is that of the Dutchman, condemned to sail his ship around the world until redeemed by a faithful woman. (Every seven years, he is allowed to step ashore in search of this salvation.)

He docks next to the ship owned by Daland, who is so impressed with the Dutchman's wealth, he offers him shelter in his home.
Daland's daughter Senta, obsessed with the legend of the Flying Dutchman, sings a ballad about him to her friends. Erik, in love with Senta, pleads his case, with no success. After a misunderstanding involving Erik, the Dutchman sets sail, while Senta leaps towards him from the top of a cliff. He is redeemed by her faith, and they are both seen rising towards heaven.

First performance:
Dresden, January 2, 1843.

First San Francisco Opera performance: October 5, 1954
