Tom Fox

Baritone Tom Fox, Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin, made his acclaimed 1990 Company debut as Alberich in Der Ring des Nibelungen, and has since appeared here as Ryuji Tsukazaki in the U.S. premiere of Das Verratene Meer and Orest in Elektra (1991), as well as Jokanaan in Salome and Jaroslav Prus in The Makropulos Case (1993).

The native of Cincinnati was a resident member of Cincinnati Opera from 1976 to 1980. He was engaged the following year as principal guest artist at the Frankfurt Opera where his roles included Amonasro in Aida, Pizarro in Fidelio, Klingsor in Parsifal, Nick Shadow in The Rake's Progress, Escamillo in Carmen, Orest in Elektra, and Alberich. Since leaving Frankfurt, he has sung in many of the world's leading opera houses.

In addition to his San Francisco Opera engagements, he has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera and with the companies of Chicago, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Montpellier, Milan (La Scala), Rome, Bologna, Turin and Brussels, among others. Roles in these houses included Scarpia in Tosca, Iago in Otello, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde, the title roles of Eugene Onegin and Der Fliegende Holländer, in addition to Alberich, Telramund, Pizarro, Prus, Orest and Jokanaan.

In South America, he has been applauded as Iago at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Escamillo in Caracas, and most recently as Wotan (role debut) in the Ring cycle in Santiago, Chile. Fox made his Salzburg Festival debut last year as the AnimalTrainer/Acrobat in Lulu and returned to Salzburg this summer as Pizarro in a new staging of Fidelio led by Georg Solti.
